This project is meant to show the juxtaposition between our built environment and the traditions that inhabit it. While this exploration by no means comes to a definite conclusion, it looks at the different elements that make up our conception of what it means to feel at home. At the forefront of our built environment, particularly in cityscapes like New York City, is concrete. The feeling of solid ground and immovable walls provides comfort and serves as a reminder of the history that has been taking place since these structures were built. I see traditions and cultural practices as something that grows and changes with each passing generation. Although the process of passing things down to “keep” traditions alive may seem like stability, for me it represents an ever-changing and growing web of human connections and individual identities. As we adopt and reinvent what came before us, how do we change the spaces we inhabit? The material’s flexibility goes hand-in-hand with the malleable nature of traditions and human practices.
